Happiness is having a scratch for every itch

They say that happiness is having a scratch for every itch and that’s certainly the case with Scratch‘n’Win, with WA Lotto players happily scratching for 40 years this year.

To mark the occasion and in celebration of our much loved ‘scratchies’, Lotterywest has released a special 40th anniversary ticket with over $1.4 million in prizes to be won.

Lotterywest Spokesperson Lisa Williams said Scratch’n’Win tickets offered WA players a choice of game styles at a range of price points.

“Scratch’n’Win tickets start from $1 ranging up to $20, so there’s a scratchie for every budget,” Ms Williams said.

“Over the past 18 months, we’ve seen 82 WA Top Prize winners share in almost $8 million from Lotterywest scratchies.”

“As well as amazing cash prizes, last year we also saw two players drive away in brand new Mercedes Benz cars.”

Lotterywest has already welcomed one Top Prize Winner who scooped $40,000 from a Celebrating 40 years scratchie within days of the special tickets going on sale.

The Halls Head man said he bought the ticket on impulse after the newsagent told him they had recently sold another Top Prize Scratch‘n’Win ticket.

“This win will set me up nicely for the future,” the player said.

“I can pay off some debts and put a chunk away for my first home – it’s a solid start to a house deposit.”

Scratch’n’Win fun facts

Lotterywest has looked back at the numbers over the past 18 months and come up with some fun facts about our much-loved scratchie games.

  • The first instant lottery was introduced in WA in December 1982 with a $1 ticket.
  • Word Play is the most popular type of game, these tickets were called Crosswords until 2011.
  • The $5 Word Play is WA’s best seller.
  • In the past 18 months, 82 Top Prize winners have shared in almost $8 million in prizes.
  • Nine of the Top Prizes were sold in the City of Wanneroo. In equal second place came the City of Swan and the City of Joondalup with six wins each.
  • The biggest Top Prize of $300,000 has been won eight times since January 2021, with Perth’s southern suburbs claiming six of these wins.
  • Scratch’n’Win tickets are programmed and printed under strict security conditions.
  • Each ticket is unique and features a special easy to scratch latex material which retains the integrity of the ticket after being removed.
  • Once printed, tickets are sent out randomly to over 480 Lotterywest retailers across Western Australia.

Thanks to scratchie players, over $380 million has been given back to the WA community over the last 15 years.

Lotterywest is uniquely the only Government owned and operated lottery in Australia. All available profits are returned to the Western Australian community through direct grants and statutory allocations. These grants are allocated in line with our vision to 'build a better Western Australia together' with the WA community.
