Overseeing our business is a six-member Board of Commissioners appointed by the Government. The Board is the ‘accountable authority’ under the Lotteries Commission Act for all aspects of our business operations. The Board has the responsibility for making recommendations to the Premier of WA for approval of the grants which Lotterywest makes directly to community and charitable organisations.
Professor Peter Klinken AC FAHMS FTSE CitWA (Chair)
Professor Peter Klinken joined the Board as Chair in October 2018. Professor Klinken is an eminent leader, academic, scientist and for over 12 years was the Director of Western Australia Institute of Medical Research and the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. Presently he is the Chief Scientist of Western Australia and holds a Companion of the Order of Australia. The Professor is a graduate of the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Science (1st Class Honours in Biochemistry), Doctor of Philosophy in Biochemistry, and Diploma of Education.
Mr Stephen Carre
Mr Stephen Carre joined the Board in December 2013. Stephen brings a wealth of experience as a small business owner of his multi-award winning IGA store in Swanbourne. He has interests in food and distribution as the Managing Director of Farm to Table, which supports farmers to distribute their products to independent retailers and supermarkets. He has held senior roles at Bankwest, and worked nationally with Westpac, NAB and IAG. He is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Business and Master of Business Administration. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Ms Miriam Borthwick
Ms Miriam Borthwick joined the board in April 2015. She is an experienced journalist, strategic communications specialist and media relations advisor. She is the Senior Media Advisor to the Harry Perkins Institute of Medial Research and consults to a wide range of clients. Miriam is currently a Board Member of Rocky Bay, a Women in Media Committee Member, past President of the Board of the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of WA, and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Professor Kingsley Dixon
Professor Kingsley Dixon joined the Board in December 2017. Kingsley is a renowned botanist and Western Australia's 2016 Scientist of the Year. Throughout his career, Kingsley has played a leading role in conserving threatened species and transforming ecological restoration practice in Australia. He is a Board Member of the International Society for Ecological Restoration, Chair of The Society for Ecological Restoration Australasia, Co-chair of the IUCN Orchid Specialist Group, Chair of the International Network for Seed Based Restoration and member of the federal Threatened Species Scientific Committee and the Alligator Rivers Research and Technical Committee. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) and PhD from the University of Western Australia.
Ms Elisabeth McLellan
Ms Elisabeth McLellan joined the Board in January 2018. Elisabeth is a leading conservationist based in Geraldton and has spent more than 25 years at the forefront of conservation, including almost ten years with WWF International in Switzerland. She now works with Bush Heritage Australia in a regional role that sees her responsible for three conservation properties and the Hamelin Outback Station Stay in Midwest WA. She oversees a team of ecologists, reserve managers and hospitality staff and is responsible for delivering conservation impacts at scale across the reserves. Elisabeth is a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature's World Commission on Protected Areas as well as the Species Survival Commission. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons), Master of Applied Science and a Graduate Diploma of Education.
Hon. Jim McGinty AM BA B.Juris(Hons) LLB
Hon. Jim McGinty joined the Board in August 2018. During his 19-year term as Member for Fremantle in the Western Australian Parliament he held positions of Minister for Health (2003 - 08), Attorney-General (2001 - 08) and Leader of the Opposition (1994 - 96). As Attorney-General, he is recognised for his contribution to law reform to reflect 21st century standards and values. Among his community commitments, Mr McGinty is Chair of North Metropolitan Health Service, Chair of Communicare and Deputy Chair of Access Housing Australia. He is a former Board Member of Telethon Kids Institute and Brightwater Care Group. He also volunteers with Fremantle Sea Rescue.
