A retired couple from Geraldton will be cheering for their AFL team in-person after celebrating a $100,000 win from a Scratch’n’Win ticket.
The woman purchased the winning scratchie from Queens Super IGA Plus Liquor in Geraldton and was in disbelief when she realised she had won.
“I kept looking at the ticket, checking again and again,” she said.
“I must have checked it more than 100 times. My husband was napping with our little grandbaby, but I just had to wake him up and tell him the news.
“I was in total shock. I had to sit down and have a cup of tea to calm myself down.”
The couple, who have recently built their home for retirement, said they will spend their prize on some new furniture and a trip to Adelaide to see their AFL team play.
“We’re going to fly to Adelaide to see the Dockers this weekend,” the winners said.
“We wouldn’t usually travel interstate to see a game, but the Dockers are having such a good run this year, and now we can go and cheer them on.”
Having played Lotto for a number of years, the couple reminisced about a Division Two win they celebrated in the early 90s, which helped them purchase a new outdoor dining set.
“It was a small win but a huge amount for us at the time,” the winner said.
“Our kids were little back then, now they’re all grown up, so this time we can take them out for dinner to celebrate.”
Lotterywest spokesperson Zoe Wender said WA players have celebrated 31 scratchie Top Prizes so far this year.
“Across the State, 33 players have scratched their way to a Top Prize this year and shared more than $4.5 million in prizes,” she said.
“It’s thanks to these WA players that community groups across the State benefit from Lotterywest grants, funded by all available profits from ticket sales.”
A Lotterywest grant of $239,034 was provided to Short Term Accommodation for Youth to support vulnerable young people in Geraldton to access key services like Medicare, Centrelink and financial services.
This weekend WA players have the chance to join the millionaire’s list, thanks to Saturday Lotto.
Tickets are available until 6pm Saturday in-store, online or via the Lotterywest App.
