Close calls – Division One wins that were almost lost

As WA players grab a ticket for Thursday’s $100 million Powerball draw, Lotterywest has taken a trip down memory lane to share some previous wins that were almost unclaimed.

To claim a Division One prize, players need to visit Lotterywest Head Office within 12 months from the date of the draw.

If the owner of a Division One prize does not claim their winnings, unclaimed prizes are returned to the WA community.

The following are examples of wins, which could have been missed.

Bayswater tradesman left $1 million in glove box for a month.

January 2020
For more than a month, a Bayswater tradie was unaware his glove box was holding more than $1 million.
The Saturday Lotto System 8 ticket from Ballajura City Lottery Centre and Post Office matched the numbers to a $1,089,093 prize.

“I work away and due to the cyclone up north I was held up over Christmas and New Year,” the winner said.

“I was meant to attend a course, but it was postponed so I decided to check my ticket, turns out I’ve had $1 million sitting in my glove box.”

Riverton ticket claimed Division One prize with only months to spare.
July 2020
Due to the impacts of COVID-19, Lotterywest increased the prize claim period for tickets with draw dates between 15 March 2020 and 15 March 2021 from 12 months to 24 months.

One WA player made the most of this extension by claiming their $613,000 prize from Willetton Newsagency with just months to spare.

Scarborough man had $2.3 million ticket in his pocket.

January 2024
A Scarborough couple recently came forward as the owners of the missing $2.3 million Saturday Lotto Division One prize from Michael's Health Care Chemist in Wembley.

The reason for not picking up the prize sooner was simply because the winner’s Slikpik 12 sat in his pocket for a whole week during the festive season.

“I’m just glad the winner didn’t jump in the pool or wash his trousers before checking the ticket,” Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney said.

The hunt is on for WA’s missing millionaires

January 2024
Currently, there are two WA winners yet to claim prizes worth a total of $3.5 million.

In March, a Wednesday Lotto ticket from Jackpot Lottery Centre in Mirrabooka matched numbers for the $1 million Division One prize.

Plus, a ticket from Good Fortune Lottery Centre in Maddington is worth $2.5 million thanks to Saturday Lotto’s Superdraw in September.

For WA players still waiting for their numbers to match a Division One prize, the next big chance is Thursday’s $100 million Powerball draw.

“If a WA player takes out the entire $100 million jackpot this week, it would set a new record for the State,” Lotterywest Acting CEO Jeremy Hubble said.

“This week’s draw is a great opportunity for players to join a syndicate, which means they can share the cost of a ticket and potentially share the joy of a win.”

Tickets for this week’s $100 million Powerball jackpot are available in-store, online and via the Lotterywest App until 6pm on Thursday.
