Meet Phil, owner of newsXpress Halls Head and newsXpress Silver Sands, who has been an integral part of the Mandurah community for more than a decade.
With a background in IT, the transition to running his own business seemed like a simple idea, but finding his niche was the hard part. “I can’t cook bacon and eggs, nor make coffee, I also don’t like the hours, so hospitality was out of the question,” he joked.
He has a team of 15 staff across the two stores that he says are more of a “family team, rather than employees. It makes being at the store enjoyable and a lifestyle that is hard to beat. We also like reminding customers that they are helping contribute to grants that support health services and community organisations.”
Phil feels his store is a point of connection for people, particularly during lockdowns, “in the pandemic our role is even more important, especially during lockdowns as we may be the only social contact that day or that week,” he said.
