Saturday Lotto winner mistakes wife’s tears for tragedy

A husband’s fears after receiving a tearful phone call from what he thought to be his grief-stricken wife soon turned to joy.

The call came from his wife’s car, leading the husband to assume she had been involved in a car incident.

“I called my husband and he thought I had been involved in an accident,” she said.

The reality was those tears were because her Saturday Lotto ticket, from Hampton Road Lottery Centre in South Fremantle, had turned into more than $940,000.

“When he found out the good news he yelled at me ‘You put me through all that, when in fact you had won the Lotto?” the wife explained.

A winter escape to Broome is now on the cards for the White Gum Valley couple, who admitted the Saturday Lotto ticket was a spur-of-the-moment purchase.

“My newsagent reminded me to check my Saturday Lotto ticket as they told me they had sold the winning ticket,” she said.

“I said ‘Here’s my winning ticket!’ as a joke.”

The winner said the newsagent took her aside to discreetly inform her of the life changing news, followed by a hug.

Hampton Road Lottery Centre & News owner Suzana Vulin said it was a pleasure to sell the lucky ticket.

“It’s our third winner for our shop, it’s been around six years since our last win,” she said.

“It’s nice to see a regular customer win a life-changing amount of money.”

Meanwhile, last night a lucky online player won a clean $1 million on Wednesday Lotto.

The next chance for WA players to live the dream is tonight’s $30 million Powerball draw and Tuesday's incredible $80 million draw. Talk to your Lotterywest retailer about combo packs.
