Double dose of luck

A grandfather in his 80s from Perth’s southern suburbs will be living the life he’s always dreamed of, after collecting $1.6 million from the weekend’s Saturday Lotto Superdraw.

The man has been playing Saturday Lotto for 30 years and religiously watches the draw on TV every week to write down the winning numbers.

He said he was in disbelief when he checked the numbers under his night light at home and immediately called his son to be sure.

“I told him to keep a cool head first, because he’s always said that to me,” the son said.

“When he read back the numbers, I said ‘Unbelievable, you’ve done it!’”

The grandfather said he’s been battling all his life and he’ll finally be able to live out his dream of setting up him and his son.

“I’ll be building my son a nice big home for his family on my property and I’ll have my own flat in the back with my dogs,” the grandfather said.

“I’ll be swapping my cereal for KFC,” he joked.

“I’m going to appreciate everything that comes my way.”

Just minutes following the grandfather’s visit, a couple in their 60s from Stirling, came to Lotterywest to collect their $1 million Monday Lotto prize from last week.

The husband and wife had no idea they were sitting on a million dollar ticket, until returning to Hutton Street Lottery Centre in Osborne Park, where they bought the ticket.

“The girl behind the counter almost fainted when she checked the ticket,” the man joked.

“She called her boss and said ‘He’s won’”

The couple contribute the win to the husband’s unwavering optimism despite having some moments where the budget was worn thin and they almost had to sell their house.

“We’ll be staying put in our house now,” the wife said.

“The money will help us with the financial pressure, but we’re going to keep our lifestyle,” the wife said.

“We’re low key people.”

The husband said he’ll happily keep working his engineering job and the prize money will be split between helping themselves, family and giving some back to charity.

“Seeing people smile and helping others is worth millions in my mind,” he said.

The next chance to win big is this Thursday’s $30 million Powerball jackpot.

Tickets are available until 6pm jackpot day from Lotterywest in-store, online or through the app.
