Friends of Kings Park

Kings Park is the playground of Perth and, thanks to a group of dedicated green thumbs, its incredible array of native flora has cemented it as one of Australia’s most significant and beautiful landmarks. Just off Fraser Avenue through a couple of gates is the heartbeat of King Park, a nursery filled with native plants and volunteers.

The nursery is run by Friends of Kings Park, an organisation which supports the Botanic Gardens & Parks Authority with activities ranging from conservation and bushland management to fundraising for special projects within the park. Friends of King Park President Pippa Moodie has helped maintain Kings Park’s beauty for 15 years.

“If you speak with the volunteers they get so passionate with what they are doing”, she said.

“We look for things that can enhance the park and improve the visitors’ feeling of the park.”

Right now, Friends of Kings Park volunteers are preparing for September’s Kings Park Festival plant sale, growing close to 10,000 plants in the nursery for it. Volunteers, together with horticulturists, have been busy planting 25,000 plants for the festival.

“It will be a month of free activities and events, spectacular outdoor exhibitions and guided walks. Volunteers from the different Kings Park groups will be involved in some way,” Ms Moodie said.

“Without Lotterywest’s support the festival would not be the success it is today.”

For more than 10 years Lotterywest has supported Friends of Kings Park, most recently with a $100,000 grant towards the 2019 Kings Park Festival.
