Giving back, Superhero style

For 21 years Glenn Cornish has been part of the Lotterywest family in Mandurah. The dedicated retailer said it’s been an amazing experience to run a small business, further acknowledged by knowing money raised from Lotterywest games goes back to the WA community.

“The fact Lotterywest gives back to the WA community is so important and something we should really be proud of,” he said.

Giving back to the community has been a full circle ride for the veteran retailer, who has volunteered for children’s charity Variety WA for the past 11 years.

Variety WA received a $297,444 Lotterywest grant, after the group was forced to cancel two of its largest annual fundraising events due the impact of COVID-19.

Glenn’s volunteering role has been in the Variety Bash – Australia’s longest running charity motoring event, a fun and social event whereby you drive to remote and regional parts of WA in a themed old car stopping at key points and raising money along the way.

“At first it was sold to me as a chance to go out into the bush with mates and explore parts of the country we would otherwise never see,” he said.

“However, despite all the fun, meeting families who are really doing it tough with sick children has taken the experience to a whole new level.

“Spending a week sleeping in a swag in the elements is all worth it because you see how much it means for the families. That feedback is a really good kick in the backside to keep us going.”

Glenn’s team can be found in a range of fancy dress ups while out on the road, their Ninja Turtles outfit is a favourite.

“When we put on the costumes, it turns into an instant carnival,” he said.

“It’s one of those life-changing events where you get the chance to see amazing places, while raising money to support families who need it most.”

The new Variety Ruby Road Trip will take place from 22 -25 October 2020 and combines Variety WA’s three annual road trip events – the Variety Bash, the Variety 4WD Adventure and the Variety Creative Car Cruise. To find out more about Variety WA, visit https://www.variety.org.au/wa/
