Lotto winner shocks wife with $1 million windfall

A retired man has come forward to claim Monday’s Division One prize with his wife, who was under the impression the couple were collecting $500.

The man in his 60s told his wife he “won a small prize”, and it wasn’t until they were sitting in the Lotterywest Winners Room she discovered the prize was $1 million.

“I’m in shock, I had no idea,” she said.

The Slikpik 12, purchased from Glengarry Lottery Centre & News in Duncraig, is WA’s first Division One win for 2024.

The ticket was registered to a membership account, so Lotterywest was able to contact the ticket holder about his win.

“I laughed and said ‘yeah, yeah’, not believing it,” the winner said.

“I logged on to my account and checked the ticket, then I laughed some more.”

The Duncraig man said he plans on sharing the money amongst family and continue volunteering.

“I volunteer for an organisation that receives Lotterywest grants, so I know where the money goes, it does so much good in the community.”

Lotterywest spokesperson Emma Rogers said in 2023, Lotto players supported WA with 460 community grants.

“Last calendar year, the WA community benefited from more than $125 million in Lotterywest grants,” she said.

The next chance for WA players to win is tomorrow night in Powerball’s $50 million jackpot.

Tickets are available in-store, online and via the Lotterywest App until 6pm Thursday.
