Growing friendships

At Willetton Community Garden, new garden beds have just had a colourful lick of paint, composting bays have been built and members are ready to plant!

According to Committee member, Noni Walker, it’s an exciting time for the garden and a result of lots of planning and support from the local community. “We promoted the garden through a lot of different avenues and our members are a real mix.

There are some people, who had a garden at home but didn’t have a lot of expertise and wanted to connect with more experienced gardeners, as well as people that didn’t have much space and those who had no garden at all.”

Lotterywest supported the group with a grant towards reticulation, which has been installed in time for the warmer weather ahead.

The group has already hosted some popular community gatherings at the garden including a ‘shed shower’ to celebrate the construction of their shed, where people were invited to donate garden tools. Noni says the garden has allowed people to pool their skills and talents to create a social and community hub. “One of our members is a retired bricklayer, others are artistic and we’re creating a bit of art in the garden.
