Midland battlers claim $4.2 million Lotto win

A struggling family from Midland has come forward to claim the State’s second Saturday Lotto Superdraw windfall worth $4.2 million.

The family, who purchased the Division 1 ticket at Canning Vale Newsagency, originally thanked Lotterywest officials for what they thought was a $420,000 win.

“We had to sit them down and explain that they’d actually pocketed $4.2 million,” Lotterywest spokeswoman Pina Compagnone said.

“They immediately broke down before the husband turned to the wife and said they could now afford to pay their overdue power bill,” she added.

The husband said he purchased the 18 game Playslip on his way home from work as a cleaner and picked the six winning numbers based on a combination of family birthdates and other special occasions.

“We’ve really been struggling to make ends meet,” he said.

“I don’t know what we’ll spend the money on but I can tell you we’ll spend it wisely,” he added.

The prize claim comes as winners in Divisions 2-6 doubled their prize money overnight thanks to Double Win Day.

“What should have been a prize pool of $222,000 was doubled to $444,000,” Ms Compagnone said.

“The best part is we’re doing it all over again on Wednesday night,” she added.

Ms Compagnone said punters could purchase tickets for the Double Win Day promotion from Lotterywest in-store, through Play Online or by downloading the app.

“The good news is even if you don’t take out a win you’re still contributing to the things that make WA great,” she said.

“Most recently we’ve been able to contribute almost a quarter of a million dollars toward improving services that support youth-at-risk in the Midland region,” she added.
