In the heart of Chidlow

The Hartnell family is the heartbeat of the Childlow community, in more ways than one. Having grown up in the small community 45km from Perth, owners Neil (third from left) and Teresa (fifth from left), have been the face of Chidlow Post House including the local newsagency, for more than three years.

Its small businesses run by families like the Hartnell’s, that have continued servicing West Aussies through COVID-19 and enabled Lotterywest to raise vital funds to support WA community groups.

The couple always aspired to own a business and an opportunity with Lotterywest came up at the right time.

“Running our own business has been a big learning curve, we’re always learning, but Lotterywest training and support are awesome,” he said.

"Both of our children work with us from time to time, as well as our staff who are locals.”

Thanks to retailers like the Hartnell family, Lotterywest has raised billions of dollars to support WA community groups, but Neil’s community vision doesn’t stop there.

Neil is approaching 20 years of service with his local volunteer bush fire brigade, after following in his father’s footsteps as a teenager.

“It’s about protecting your community,” he said.

“I grew up here, spent seven years away due to work, then it drew me back. It’s definitely my hometown and you do what you can to protect it.”

His service was once again called upon in early 2021, when the Wooroloo bushfire ravaged the area.

“It may be a fire pun, but it gives you a warm glow knowing that you have helped out and protected your community.”

Neil is also taking part in the MACA 200, Ride to Conquer Cancer in October this year, raising money for the Harry Perkins Cancer Research Institute. You can support his efforts at this link https://www.cancer200.org.au/fundraisers/neilhartnell

From Saturday 11 September to 18 September it’s National Newsagent Week, an opportunity for us to recognise the contribution newsagents make to our community. This years theme is Your Newsagent, Your Community Heartbeat which perfectly represents newsagents, as an essential service to all West Aussies.
