Last minute Father’s Day gift leads handyman to collect $2.5 million

A last-minute Father’s Day gift has delivered a Wagin handyman with a Lotto win worth $2.5 million.

The ticket, bought from Wagin Newsagency, was amongst four national Division One winners to secure a share in last weekend’s special $10 million Saturday Lotto event.

In his 60s, the man said his youngest son had forgotten to buy him a gift for Father’s Day and raced to the local newsagency late last Sunday to buy him some Lotto tickets.

Not wanting to appear ‘stingy’ he bought games on OZ Lotto, Set for Life and Saturday Lotto.

“This was lucky because it was line 17 of a Slikpik 18 Saturday Lotto ticket that won,” the winner said.

“As soon as I realised I'd won, I started screaming and jumping up and down and scared the grandkids . . . I told them they could go and buy some treats.”

The winner’s other sons drove to Wagin immediately to celebrate the good news.

“We’ll most likely buy a new shed, and a new car and caravan to do some more travelling, plus invest some so we’ll have more to give the boys and family,” he said.

“I’ll also semi-retire and this will enable me to do some voluntary work, which I’ve always wanted to do.”

The man and his family planned to celebrate with a fish and chips dinner.

Lotterywest spokesperson Hermione Coleman said the next chance to win was in Thursday's $8 million Powerball jackpot.

Tickets can be purchased in-store, online or via the app up until 6pm on the day of draw.

Ends.
