A group of work colleagues from Northam are celebrating a $1.6 million Saturday Lotto prize, after playing together for more than 20 years.
Each week the group of 28 put $5 into a kitty for a Saturday Lotto systems ticket.
The syndicate organiser was none the wiser until she returned to Northam Central Newsagency to check her ticket from Saturday’s draw on 12 April.
“We’ve had a few small wins over the years, including a Division Two win, but you never expect a Division One win to actually happen,” the ticketholder said.
“I was in total shock.”
The 28 players will each take home around $58,000 and plan to celebrate with an extra special morning tea at work.
The ticketholder said the group was elated when she shared the good news, and immediately started discussing plans for holidays, renovations and mortgages.
Nicki Malinowski, owner of Northam Central Newsagency said a Division One win always creates hustle and bustle in Northam.
“Being a small town, once word gets out that there’s a Division One win in town, everybody gets excited,” she said.
“Our last Division One win was back in August, so it’s great to have another one so soon.”
Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney said the next chance for WA players to win a major prize is tonight’s $70 million OZ Lotto jackpot.
“Some of WA’s biggest wins have been claimed thanks to the power of a syndicate ticket, which is a great way to share the cost of a ticket and the joy of a win,” he said.
Tickets for OZ Lotto’s $70 million jackpot are available until 6pm on Tuesday in-store, online and via the Lotterywest App.
