‘I didn’t even know he bought a ticket’ a life changing phone call

A Hocking man needed the help of strangers to convince his wife he wasn’t joking when he called to tell her they were now millionaires.

The man is the owner of a Wednesday Lotto ticket from Woodvale Boulevard Newsagency, which is now worth $1 million.

The winner said he didn’t usually play Wednesday Lotto, in what was a spit second decision.

“I went to buy a Set for Life ticket, but as I was looking at the prices of Wednesday Lotto tickets, I decided to buy one,” he said.

“When I checked the ticket and realised I had won, I called my wife to tell her.

“She didn’t believe me, until she heard other people in the store yell down the phone to confirm I wasn’t joking.”

While celebrating in the Lotterywest Winner’s Room, the couple said they were stunned by the win.

“I didn’t even know he bought a ticket,” she said.

Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney said this Thursday’s Powerball jackpot has moved into record breaking territory for WA.

“The largest Division One win in WA history stands at $50 million, thanks to a ticket sold in Armadale in 2015,” Mr Mooney said.

“It would be nice to see this WA record grow to $60 million.

“For Thursday’s Powerball draw, we’re expecting up to 500 to tickets sold per minute during the busiest hour of ticket sales.”

Tickets for the $60 million Powerball jackpot are available until 6pm draw day from Lotterywest in-store, online or via the app.

Lotterywest is the only State owned and operated lottery across Australia, with all profits returned through the organisation’s grants program to support to WA community.
