A Mandurah woman who re-routed to Pinjarra for cat litter is celebrating winning a $1.6 million Saturday Lotto prize.
The woman, in her 70s, who had been playing with the same numbers for more than 50 years, bought a ticket in Pinjarra for the first time.
“I needed kitty litter, and thought I’d go to Pinjarra to avoid the busy traffic,” she said.
“I usually buy tickets at places around Mandurah, Halls Head or Silver Sands, but while I was in Pinjarra I thought I’d stop at the newsagent there.”
Thanks to the woman registering the ticket to her Lotterywest membership, she received a phone call from Lotterywest the following day with the good news.
“I got a call from the Lotterywest customer services team while driving and I quickly pulled over,” the winner said.
“I couldn’t believe it, you never expect it to happen to you. I’m still processing it to be honest.
“I was worried it was a scam, so I called Lotterywest right back on their main number to confirm.”
Lotterywest spokesperson Zoe Wender said registering your ticket is a great way to keep it safe, and WA players can sign up to a Lotterywest membership for free, online or through the Lotterywest App.
“All Lotterywest members can receive a physical or digital membership card that can be shared with their local retailer prior to purchasing a ticket, so the ticket can be registered for safe keeping,” she said.
“When a registered ticket matches the numbers to a Division One prize, the player receives a phone call first thing the next business day.
“Our customer service team love to make these phone calls, sharing this once in a lifetime moment with players, breaking the good news and hearing their story.”
WA players have the chance to win $20 million in tonight’s Powerball jackpot.
Tickets for the draw are available until 6pm in-store, online and via the Lotterywest App.
