What you need to know for tonight’s $60M Powerball draw

Records

  • If WA produces one $60 million winner it would be a record for the state.
  • The biggest win in WA Lotto history was when a Perth family took out the entire $50 million on Powerball in July 2015.
  • The Australian record for an individual winner is $107 million in January 2019. It was won on Powerball by a Sydney woman.
  • The highest Powerball jackpot was $150 million in September, it was split three ways ($50 million each) to two winners in QLD and one in NSW.
  • On the day of draw 4pm-5pm is the busiest hour for purchasing tickets, so get in earlier.

Lotterywest has two hot tips for players hoping for a multi-million dollar windfall on Thursday night’s $60 million Powerball: Powerpik tickets and syndicates.

“We’ve crunched the numbers for WA Division One winners for the past 12 months and we found that almost half the winnings went to syndicates, whether formal ones, or informal syndicates among friends, families and work colleagues,” Lotterywest spokesperson Jennie Fitzhardinge said.

"Of the $89 million won on Division One – across all Lotto games – in the past 12 months, $40.5 million, or just under half the total prize money was won by syndicates.

“With Powerball at an incredible $60 million, there is no doubt that is more than enough to go around!

“The second hot tip is to spend that pooled money on Powerpik entries. Powerpik gives you the Powerball, greatly improving the odds because instead of having to choose 8 winning numbers, you only need to get lucky with 7.”

Ticket types, “hot” numbers and suburbs

  • A great way to play Powerball is with a Powerpik ticket. It gives you the winning Powerball number, which increases your chances of winning since you need the Powerball number to win Division One and five of the other nine divisions.
  • We expect to sell more than 450,000 tickets in this draw, which is almost 1 in 4 Western Australians playing.
  • Since April 2018, the most frequent winning numbers from Barrel A were:
    • 17 (drawn 26 times)
    • 9,11 (drawn 25 times each) and
    • 2, 7 and 20 (drawn 24 times each).
  • If you want to go against the grain, the least frequently drawn numbers were:
    • 12 (11 times)
    • 1 & 15 (12 times)
    • 26 (13 times)

  • Most frequent winning numbers picked from Barrel B (the Powerball) were:
    • 3 & 19 (drawn 8 times)
    • 4 & 13 (drawn 7 times)
    • 2, 6, 7 & 9 (drawn 6 times each)

  • The least frequently drawn Powerball numbers are 1& 18 (twice)
  • A Powerpik 7 is $24.20.
  • Instore sales: 77% are Slikpiks, 22% of people choose their own numbers, about 3.5% of tickets are syndicates; 25% are system tickets (these can be Slikpiks or payslips).
  • In 2018-19, the most popular tickets were Slikpik 12, Slikpik 18, Powerpik 7 followed by System 8 and Slikpik 25.

Community

  • In 2018-19 financial year, Powerball raised around $84 million for the WA community
