Lotterywest: Show Gambling Who’s Boss

The Problem Gambling Support Services Committee has launched a major advertising campaign to encourage people affected by problem gambling to access free and confidential counselling services.

The 'Show Gambling Who's Boss' campaign was launched at Centrecare by Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia and will be rolled out across social and online media over the next 12 months.

The campaign is funded by the Problem Gambling Support Services Committee - featuring Lotterywest.

The committee funds a 24/7 helpline, online counselling and face-to-face counselling services for those affected by problem gambling.

The campaign targets males aged 20 to 40 years who continue to be the most at-risk group, although the percentage of Western Australians with gambling problems remains low compared to other States.

Advertising will also be placed throughout TAB locations and broadcast on radio during events where peak gambling takes place including the Commonwealth Games, FIFA World Cup and Melbourne Cup.

Problem gambling support services are available by calling the Problem Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858 or visiting http://www.gamblinghelponline.org.au

Comments attributed to Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia:

"The State Government is committed to working with the gambling industry and health services sectors to support initiatives that educate and raise awareness of responsible gambling.

"While WA's rate of problem gamblers has remained consistent for a number of years - supported by the State Government's 'no-pokies' policy, it's important to raise awareness of the help available for those who may be affected by a gambling problem.

"I understand that it can be a sensitive topic to talk about for some people and this campaign strikes the right balance between being encouraging but not aggressive.

"Anyone experiencing difficulty with gambling is encouraged to seek help early to minimise the long-term harm that problem gambling can cause."
