Fate strikes struggling teacher

A man from Success who has finally come forward to claim over $671,000 more than a week after the draw said he almost didn’t purchase his usual weekly ticket which turned out to be the big winner.

He said he was feeling unlucky that day and just wanted to skip the line and go straight to a café for a hot chocolate.

“The stars aligned for me that day! I’m so happy I was patient because the winning ticket was waiting for me at that very moment,” he said.

The unemployed teacher, who was just keeping his head above water, said the $671,513 prize will change his life by providing a modest, comfortable retirement.

“I’ve always been a teacher and the work has really dried up over the past few months,” he said.

“The lack of work and uncertainty of being able to support myself in my imminent retirement really got me down.

“I was feeling so unlucky and down, even after I saw I had the first four numbers, I didn’t think I was a big prize winner.”

Looking for confirmation he was holding the winning ticket, the man said he asked a family dining next to him to check his ticket against the numbers in the paper.

“When they told me I had all six, I was trembling! The adrenalin has soared through me and now I’m focused on how to sensibly make this money go the distance,” he said.

The winning ticket was from a Saturday Lotto draw held on 11 August and was purchased from Cockburn Gateway Lottery Centre in Success. It’s the third Division One ticket sold in the Success suburb this year.

Looking to add your name to the Division One winners club? Superdraw Saturday is just around the corner with a $20 million Division One prize pool on offer on 1 September.

Thanks to those that play Lotterywest games, the WA community is a winner too! Over the last ten years, 75 organisations were approved for 166 Lotterywest grants in the City of Cockburn (where Success is) sharing in over $13.3 million.
