Meet Kamal from Beckenham Newsagency

To celebrate National Science Week, we want you to meet Kamal; not only has he owned and operated Beckenham Newsagency with his wife and daughter for more than 12 years, he’s also a sleep scientist.

He serves between 200 to 300 regular customers daily and says service is key – it’s all about making his customers happy.

When he’s not working in his store he’s helping people who have trouble getting a good night’s sleep.

“Sleep is an area sometimes forgotten about. Everyone focuses on nutrition and exercise, but you spend one third of your life sleeping, so it’s an important part of your overall health,” he says.

Kamal says switching between his two very different jobs isn’t a challenge, he really enjoys it.

“The store keeps me on my toes, I only have a few seconds to give my customers advice or answer their questions. In the clinic I have 45 minutes to listen, think and react,” he said.

Kamal’s favourite game is Saturday Lotto because it creates the most winners out of all the Lotto games and his customers also love it.

Kamal’s tips for a good night sleep

  • There’s no such thing as sleep catch-up. Try to have eight to nine hours each night
  • Make sure the temperature in your bedroom is a little cooler
  • Your bedroom needs to be as dark as possible, switch off night lamps

No TV or looking at screens for at least two hours before bedtime
