Lotterywest grants protect native cockatoos

Founded in 2006, the Black Cockatoo Preservation Society of Australia rescue wild black cockatoos in distress and rehabilitate them before releasing them back into the wild.

The three species of black cockatoo native to the South West of Western Australia are the Baudin’s black cockatoo, the Carnaby’s cockatoo, and the Forest Red-tailed black cockatoo. Sadly, all are threatened with extinction due to activities including land clearing and illegal shooting, plus competition with other species for nesting sites.

The rehabilitation site, Kaarakin, is a 40-acre site in the Perth Hills where they house up to 120 black cockatoos under care at any one time.

This year, the Black Cockatoo Preservation Society lost its ability to fundraise due to COVID-19 restrictions, resulting in a significant loss in revenue. Two Lotterywest COVID-19 Relief Fund grants totalling $110,000 are now supporting essential operational costs.

Founder Glenn Dewhurst said: “We wouldn’t have been able to afford the resources to feed the animals we’re caring for, so Lotterywest has been able to keep us running.”

Thanks to you playing Lotterywest games, Lotterywest is able to support groups like the Black Cockatoo Preservation Society build a better WA.
