A sustained effort from Lotterywest

Lotterywest is averting thousands of litres of waste from landfill thanks to minor changes in work habits.

Known as the Sustainability Action Plan, the goal is to help staff effortlessly contribute to environmentally sustainable practices at work and home.

Lotterywest CEO Susan Hunt, PSM, said Lotterywest has made it simple for all staff to participate, which is key to the program’s success.

“Small actions we make as a group to reducing our use of pollutants and maximising recycling efforts, add up to a bigger contribution when embraced throughout the organisation,” Ms Hunt said.

“From using just one cup of water to wash one of our fleet cars, to free coffee keep cups available for all staff, we’ve made lots of small changes to how we work.

“We also have facilities for non-council recyclables such as batteries, soft plastics, coffee pods, toothpaste and floss containers, and organic or compostable waste.

“An added bonus is the great feeling you get knowing you’re doing what you can at work, which hopefully inspires people at home and contributes to the broader community.”

Lotterywest’s Sustainability Action Plan has diverted from landfill around:

  • 4000L of organics
  • 850L of soft plastics
  • 7L of batteries
  • 8000L of general recycling.

It’s estimated in the 2019-20 financial year around 26,000 litres of general recycling and more than 12,400 litres of organics will be diverted from landfill.

Lotterywest no longer distributes balloons to retailers, instead offering reusable promotional products.

Access to corporate smart riders for offsite business meetings along with careful sourcing of stationery, cleaning products and catering also minimise Lotterywest’s environmental impact.
