55 women celebrate $80 million Powerball prize

A group of 55 women from a northern suburbs gym have claimed the entire Division One Powerball jackpot, worth $80 million.

The women from Curves, a ladies-only gym in Beldon, each put in $5 for their share of the Slikpik 50 winning ticket sold from Beaumaris News and Post in Ocean Reef.

The winner, who put the unofficial syndicate together, said she had not done a syndicate like this for years, but with $80 million on offer, decided to take a chance.

“Since COVID-19 the gym has been really struggling, and a lot of the ladies at the gym are real Aussie battlers and come here as an outlet,” the winner said.

“We’re a real community and this is going to be life-changing for every single one of us.

“The future is looking so bright.”

In her 50s, the winner said she was at a Christmas dinner last night with some of the syndicate members when they found out.

“One of our husband’s called to tell us we had won and the minute we found out it was pandemonium,” she said.

“I called over to the waiter and asked for their finest bottle of champagne.

“Christmas this year is going to be bigger, brighter and better than ever - it will be a very special time for all of us.”

Lotterywest Acting CEO Jeremy Hubble said this was a history-making moment with the largest win ever experienced in WA.

“It’s always incredible to meet our winners and to meet such a large group of syndicate winners, who can all share in the magic and joy, is just wonderful,” he said.

“This record-breaking win for WA shares the title of third highest on a national level.”

The next chance to win big is in Tuesday night’s OZ Lotto $30 million jackpot.

Tickets can be purchased from Lotterywest in-store, online, or through the app.
