Where the money goes
In 2010/11, Lotterywest’s customers bought lottery products totalling over $683 million.
So how is this money used?
Almost 60% of sales from our products goes in prizes to our players. In 2010, Western Australians won prizes totalling over $397.3 million, including 77 lucky players who won a Division One Lotto prize. For some of the stories behind the big wins enjoy reading our Winners Stories.
Lotterywest’s operating costs account for around 7% of our revenue. Another 8% is paid in commission, which is added to the price of the tickets, and subsequently to the Lotterywest retailers who sell our games.
As a Western Australian government statutory authority, this means that apart from the prizes to our players, our operating costs and the commission paid to retailers, the balance of the money spent on Lotterywest games is returned to the Western Australian community. Public hospitals and the State’s health services, sporting organisations, arts and cultural groups and thousands of charities and community groups are the biggest winners of all from our business. This amounts to around 34 cents in every dollar spent on a Lottery product. For some of the stories behind our grants read our grant stories.
