14 May 2012

A week dedicated to promoting responsible gambling practices in Western Australia will take place from 14-20 May with Responsible Gambling Awareness Week.

The key theme of the week, 'Gamble Aware - Play Smart Stay in Control', emphasises the need to undertake gambling activities in a responsible manner and that gambling should be balanced and controlled to be enjoyed.

Director of Centrecare Tony Pietropiccolo, said Responsible Gambling Awareness Week aims to raise awareness of the importance of responsible gambling practices at both a personal and community level, and encourages individuals experiencing difficulties to seek help to minimise gambling related harm.

"For a large number of people gambling, it's an enjoyable experience but for some it adversely affectsmany areas of their life, including their family and friends," he said.

"Responsible Gambling Awareness Week will help to provide the local community with information about support services they can access such as Centrecare's gambling help counselling services in Western Australia, the Gambling Awareness Helpline and the Gamble Aware website.

"Supporting this initiative is just one of many ways that government and industry can work together to
address important issues such as problem gambling."

Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is a collaborative partnership between the Gaming and
Wagering Commission of Western Australia, Lotterywest, Burswood, Racing and Wagering Western Australia, Centrecare and Medibank Health Solutions.

Throughout the week, the key theme 'Gamble Aware - Play Smart Stay in Control' will promote
responsible gambling practices at Burswood Casino, in Lotterywest retail outlets and TAB outlets.

More information on the week can be found at www.gambleaware.com.au

The website provides people with the opportunity to complete an anonymous questionnaire to identify if gambling has become a problem for them, or a member of their family, and where they can seek help.

Country WA continues its Lotto winning streak, with two Division 1 winning tickets sold in Mandurah and Busselton from the weekend's $20 million Saturday Lotto Superdraw.

The winning tickets, each worth over $3.3 million and sold at Meadow Springs Lottery Centre & Newsagency and Broadwater News in Busselton, were among six Division 1 winning tickets sold nationwide in the draw.

Whether a coincidence or a twist of fate, Meadow Springs Lottery Centre & Newsagency sold a Division 1 winning ticket in the same May Superdraw last year.

"We can't believe we've sold another winning ticket in the same draw as we sold one last year," said owner Carmel Italiano.

"That's now six Division 1 winning tickets in four years for us."

When Lotterywest spoke to Susan Davidson from Broadwater News this morning, she also was ecstatic to have sold her second Division 1 winning ticket in less than a year.

"We're really excited! This win will surely put us on the map as a lucky outlet," she said.

It was not just our Lotto winners that had something to smile about after this draw; through Lotterywest games played last week, over $10 million was raised for the Western Australian community. That's a huge win for our State!

Lotterywest is still waiting to hear from the State's newest Division 1 winners.

Lotterywest supports responsible play

As part of our commitment to play responsibly, Lotterywest is once again supporting Responsible Gambling Awareness Week from 14 to 20 May.

This year's theme 'Gamble Aware: Play Smart, Stay in Control' aims to promote responsible gambling practices amongst the local community.

Winners from Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia will be celebrating winning $24.9 million each.

While no Western Australians were able to match the Division 1 winning numbers in tonight's draw, over 337,510 Western Australians won prizes in the draw's other Divisions, including five Division 2 prizes worth $47,006.65 each.

"We are absolutely delighted with Western Australia's response to tonight's OZ Lotto draw and that five Western Australians picked up a Division 2 prize," said Lotterywest CEO Jan Stewart.

"We would have loved for a Western Australian to win Division 1 but the big winner is the Western Australian community that will be supported through our grants program."

Tonight's OZ Lotto draw alone raised $7.5 million for local hospitals, sporting and recreation groups, the arts and thousands of community organisations across the State.

There are two more chances for Western Australian's to win big this week with Thursday night's $20 million Powerball jackpot and the $20 million Saturday Lotto Superdraw.

As Western Australia gets set for one of the biggest Lotto draws in Australian Lotto history tomorrow night, country Western Australia has delivered two Division 1 winners in the weekend's Saturday Lotto draw.

The winning tickets, each worth close to $680,000, were sold at Eaton Fair Lottery Centre & News and Karratha Lottery Centre and Newsagency.

When Lotterywest spoke to David Rodgers, the owner of Eaton Fair Lottery Centre & News this morning, Lotto fever was certainly abuzz at his store.

"We are so happy - this is just very timely in the lead up to tomorrow night's $70 million OZ Lotto draw," he said.

"People have a dream when they buy a Lotto ticket and when they can see that it really can come to reality; it makes it all very exciting."

The last time Eaton Fair had a Division 1 win in 2010, they celebrated two wins in two weeks.

Annette Main from Karratha Lottery Centre and Newsagency was also thrilled at the news of her outlet selling a Divison 1 winning ticket so close to tomorrow night's $70 million OZ Lotto draw.

"Things are just going off! I think every person in Karratha has been in here buying a ticket in the big draw," she said.

Tomorrow night's $70 million OZ Lotto jackpot draw

With ticket sales soaring, tomorrow night's $70 million OZ Lotto jackpot draw is capturing the imagination of Lotto players around the State.

$70 million is the second highest Division 1 Lotto prize ever to be offered in the game's history.

If Western Australia's recent run of Lotto luck is anything to go by, the State has every chance that another local Lotto player could add their name to the top of the Division 1 winners list tomorrow night.

With a prize offering like $70 million, the dreams of more than just a handful of Lotto players could certainly become a reality," said Lotterywest spokesperson Pina Compagnone.

Tickets for the $70 million OZ Lotto draw are available from Lotterywest retailers around the state or online at www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au until 6pm tomorrow night.

It's not just local winners that are set to benefit from the draw, Lotterywest also expects to raise close to $6 million for the Western Australian community.

There are only hours to go until an incredible $50 million prize goes on offer in tonight's OZ Lotto jackpot draw.

Retailers are reporting a very busy day with local Lotto players queuing to secure their ticket which might just help them win the 'big one'.

Some of these players have been flocking to Hutton Street Lottery Centre and Newsagency in Osborne Park. The outlet has experienced two Division 1 OZ Lotto wins in the last two years.

In March last year, the outlet sold a $15 million winning ticket to a Mount Hawthorn grandfather and in June 2010, it organised a winning syndicate which delivered a $17.4 million prize which was shared amongst eight syndicate members.

Owner of Hutton Street Lottery Centre and Newsagency, Mrs Sushie Govender, said it had been an extremely busy few days with customers excited about the possibility of winning this huge prize.

"Today will just be crazy, with about four times the amount of customers compared to a normal day coming through our doors," Mrs Govender said.

"Our past luck on syndicates has meant they have been a popular choice with our customers. We have organised over 50 syndicates for the draw."

Lotterywest spokesperson Pina Compagnone said Lotterywest was expecting to sell over half a million tickets for tonight's draw.

"Soaring sales for the draw will also help Lotterywest to raise over $4 million for the Western Australian community," Ms Compagnone said.

Tickets for tonight's $50 million OZ Lotto jackpot are available until 6pm from any Lotterywest retailer across the State or from the Lotterywest Play Online service at www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au

The draw will be screened on Channel Seven and GWN at approximately 6:30pm.

26 April 2012

For only the fourth time in OZ Lotto history, next Tuesday's draw (1 May) has jackpotted to $50 million.
The $50 million jackpot is a result of no player in the country having the numbers to take out Tuesday night's (24 April) $30 million Division 1 prize.

OZ Lotto has not jackpotted to this multi-million dollar figure since June 2010, when it produced three national Division 1 winners, including a local syndicate who shared in $17.4 million.

The winning syndicate was organised by Hutton Street Lottery Centre and Newsagency in Osborne Park, with the prize money shared amongst eight lucky local players who each took home $2.1 million.

It's not just Lotto luck that has struck the suburb of Osborne Park with Lotterywest also delivering 46 grants worth a combined $4 million to the area over the last two years.

This includes a $16,225 Lotterywest Grant given to community music group Catch Music in Osborne Park to purchase musical equipment.

Lotterywest spokesperson Pina Compagnone said if Tuesday night's Division 1 prize of $50 million was won by a Western Australian player, it would make local history as the largest Division 1 prize ever won in this State.

"The largest prize ever won by a Western Australian Lotto player to date is $30 million but that could all change following Tuesday's big draw," she said.

The record $30 million Division 1 prize has been won twice in Western Australia, in 2001 by a Perth's southern suburbs couple and again in 2007 by a university student in his 20s.

Can't wait for next Tuesday night's $50 million jackpot draw? There are still a few hours to purchase tickets in tonight's $10 million Powerball jackpot draw.

Tickets for both draws are available from all Lotterywest retailers around the State or from the Lotterywest Play Online service at www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au

23 April 2012

Western Australian Lotto players will have two chances to pick up big Lotto prizes this week, with tomorrow night's $30 million OZ Lotto jackpot draw and Thursday night's $10 million Powerball jackpot draw.

Both games gave local Lotto players some memorable wins last year but it wasn't just the winners who benefited from these draws, with Lotterywest also raising $236.6 million for the Western Australian community in 2011.

It was a triple treat for local Lotto players when OZ Lotto luck came to Western Australia three times last year.

Luck first struck the State in March, when a Mount Hawthorn grandfather collected a $15 million OZ Lotto prize after winning on the six numbers his grandson had chosen.

The man in his 60s said making a donation to Princess Margaret Hospital and helping out his children and grandchildren were on the top of his list.

Then in September, OZ Lotto luck visited the Mid West town of Geraldton. The $7.5 million winning ticket had the biggest prize ever won in the country town and was claimed by a retired couple in their 70s, who at the time were travelling the Mid West region.

The couple had played the same numbers for 10 years when their persistence finally paid off. They planned to pay off their five children's mortgages, as well as to give support to one of their children who had been battling a serious illness.

Just before the year ended, OZ Lotto luck struck a third time in November, when a Hearthridge couple collected the entire $20 million OZ Lotto Division 1 prize pool.

Although the multi-million dollar winners planned to keep working even after their big win, they said the win would pave the way forward for a comfortable and enjoyable retirement.

"You wouldn't make this sort of money in a life time. We are over the moon! However I'll still go home and do my washing and mow the lawn," the woman said.

A Division 1 Powerball prize also made it onto Western Australia's winners' tally in June last year after a mother and son from Clarkson collected the entire $6 million prize pool.

The duo said the multi-million dollar win could not have come at a better time with the Clarkson mother only weeks away from losing her home due to some serious financial troubles. She said the win was life changing and would allow her and her husband to live a peaceful and enjoyable retirement.

For the Clarkson son, the win meant a secure future for his wife and children, particularly his daughter who had special needs. He said it was a good feeling to know all the financial problems that he had been carrying for the last few years were now over.

So far this year, 26 Western Australian Lotto players have shared in $20.8 million worth of Division 1 prizes.

Don't miss your chance to add your name to the State's Division One winners' tally with tickets for tomorrow night's $30 million OZ Lotto jackpot on sale until 6pm tomorrow and tickets for the $10 million Powerball jackpot available until 6pm this Thursday.

19 April 2012

Two of Western Australia's Lotto winners who picked up Division 1 in Lotto earlier this month have finally come forward to claim their big prizes.

A married couple from Pinjarra have collected their $707,389 prize which they purchased from Woodley's Central Lottery Centre in Mandurah. This was closely followed by a young Kardinya couple who picked up their $469,462 prize after buying their ticket from The Lucky Lottery Centre at Booragoon's Garden City Shopping Centre.

The Pinjarra couple said the ticket had been sitting in the man's wallet almost forgotten about until they were prompted to check it after reading about the Division 1 win in their local newspaper.

"It's us, were the first words that I screamed once I realised we had the winning ticket. We were just over the moon," the man said.

The couple said their Lotto win had come at the perfect time and would help to bring their retirement forward.

"As well as sharing the prize with our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, we also plan on
travelling Australia and then the world," they said.

A new home and an exciting future were planned for the Kardinya couple who picked up their $469,462 prize in the weekend's Saturday Lotto draw.

The regular Lotto players said they had been in a daze since finding out they had struck Division 1 Lotto luck.

"So many exciting plans are running through our heads. This has set us up for the future," they said.

A new house, new car and an overseas holiday were just a few of the things on the Lotto list for the young couple who said Lotto luck could strike anyone, anytime.

"It's all about persistence and being positive," they said.

Other Western Australian Lotto players will have their chance to pick up a big prize when $30 million goes on offer in next Tuesday's OZ Lotto jackpot draw.

Tickets are available until 6pm on Tuesday (24 April) from any Lotterywest retailers around the State, or from the Lotterywest Play Online service at www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au

The Super66 prize was purchased from South Perth's Vaucluse Newsagency, while the Division 1 winning Lotto ticket was purchased from The Lucky Lottery Centre located in the Garden City Shopping Centre.

It was the third Division 1 Lotto ticket sold at the Garden City Shopping Centre in four months, with all three lottery outlets located in the centre selling a Division 1 winner.

In December, Garden City Lottery Centre sold a $510,618 winning ticket. This was followed by The Lotto Lottery Centre which sold a $371,450 winning ticket only a week later.

Owner of The Lucky Lottery Centre Soon-Chiang Yong, who sold the weekend's $469,462 winning ticket, said he knew it was only a matter of time before it was his turn.

"We are really excited, I think this could be the start of something good," Mr Yong said.

It's not just three Lotto wins that have been delivered to Booragoon recently, the suburb has also received three Lotterywest grants over the last 12 months to help support local community groups in the area.

This includes support to the Booragoon Occasional Child Care Centre who received a $12,200 Lotterywest Grant to develop the centre's bike path and play area.

This support has been made possible by local players and the Lotterywest games they play, with 34 cents in every dollar spent used to support the Western Australian community.

The weekend wins now brings Western Australia's tally of Division 1 winners this year to 26. These winners have shared in over $20 million worth of prize money.

Lotterywest is still waiting to hear from the State's weekend Division 1 and Super66 winners.
