Northern suburbs couple thank broken lawn mower for $5 million OZ Lotto win!
A married couple from Perth's northern suburbs has thanked a broken lawn mower for their $5 million OZ Lotto windfall.
The couple scooped the entire $5 million Division 1 prize pool in OZ Lotto on Tuesday night after purchasing their ticket from Padbury News and Post.
It was a last minute decision by the couple on the day of the draw to buy their winning ticket, which cost them only $7.20.
"I was on my way back from getting a new part for the lawn mower when I realised we didn't have a ticket for
that night's draw. I passed the Padbury outlet and thought I might as well give it a go. I'm glad I did!" the man said.
The couple found out about their big win the night of the draw when they sat down over a coffee to check their numbers.
"We've been so excited and nervous that we haven't been able to sleep. I think we managed to get about one hour the first night we knew. It still feels surreal," they said.
The couple said plans for the multi-million dollar win included sharing it with family, travelling, new cars and a new home.
"We're happy with our home but we would like to upgrade to something a bit nicer, something the wife likes. I might even get someone to do my gardening," the man laughed.
The $5 million Lotto win is the largest prize to be won in WA so far this year and brings the State's tally of Division 1 Lotto winners to 15.
It's not just WA winners that have something to celebrate following a Lotto draw; the community benefits too with 33 cents of each dollar spent on lottery games supporting the local community.
Over the last 12 months, the City of Joondalup has received 33 Lotterywest Grants totalling almost $900,000. These grants have supported a wide range of groups and activities from equipment for the Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group, to activities for seniors at Sorrentos' Seacrest Village Social Club.
