Grant for vehicles to support irrigation trial

Thursday, 8 October 2015
  • Lotterywest grant of $116,000 to the Mowanjum Aboriginal Corporation
  • Vehicles to support training and work opportunities for the Mowanjum community

A Lotterywest grant of $116,000, presented today by Premier Colin Barnett to the Mowanjum Aboriginal Corporation, will fund the purchase of two vehicles to support an irrigation pilot project near Derby.

The irrigation trial is a joint research partnership between the State Government and Mowanjum Aboriginal Corporation and will investigate intensive grazing methods on Mowanjum Pastoral Station.

The $3.6 million project is part of the State Government's Water for Food program, funded through Royalties for Regions, aimed at increasing economic growth and regional employment.

Mr Barnett said the purchase of these vehicles would provide opportunities for increased participation in the trial by members of the Mowanjum community.

"These vehicles will support the delivery of this important project by providing transportation to the station for community members who are involved," he said.

Until now access to vehicles has been limited in the remote Aboriginal community. The acquisition of two dedicated vehicles will allow the project to operate more efficiently by ensuring transportation for people and equipment is available at all times.

The Premier said the project would have long-lasting benefits for the Mowanjum community by providing opportunities for employment, as well as training and education.

"The project has the potential to provide the community with significant social and economic benefits and these vehicles will make it easier for community members to participate in the trial," he said.

A significant milestone for the project was realised in August with water now flowing through the recently installed centre pivot irrigator, which was officially commissioned on Tuesday by Water Minister Mia Davies and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman. The project is expected to be completed by June 2018.
