Black Diggers - from the theatre to regional TV

Thursday, 23 April 2015
  • Critically acclaimed theatre production, Black Diggers, telecast in regional WA
  • More than 100 regional centres, towns and remote communities to benefit

As part of Anzac Centenary commemorations, residents in more than 100 regional Western Australian towns and remote communities will have the opportunity to watch the critically acclaimed theatre production, Black Diggers, this Friday evening.

An all-male cast in Black Diggers tell the story - through a series of vignettes - of the hundreds of Aboriginal soldiers who signed up to fight for Australia on the battlefields of Europe.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said Black Diggers was recently performed and recorded at the State Theatre Centre of WA so it could be exclusively telecast through Westlink.

“Not only will the telecast help bring part of the Anzac Centenary commemorations to a broader regional audience, Black Diggers tells an important and, until recently, largely untold story of World War I,” Mr Day said.

“I was fortunate to be able to see this performance at the State Theatre and I encourage everyone who can access Westlink to tune in and watch this inspiring and well told story.”

Black Diggers will also be shown at the Albany Entertainment Centre and Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the telecast complemented the other State Government Royalties for Regions’ initiatives commemorating the Anzac Centenary, adding to the depth and diversity of offerings in regional WA.

“This initiative has been supported through the Royalties for Regions program to provide regional audiences with the opportunity to see this incredible theatre production in their local community,” Mr Redman said.

“It will help to support a broader community involvement for the commemorative program while strengthening our understanding of this period that has helped shaped our State.”

Black Diggers is a co-production between the Queensland Theatre Company and the Sydney Festival, and was written by Tom Wright and directed by Wesley Enoch.
