From ramen to riches: Student among Saturday syndicate Lotto win

A Saturday Lotto syndicate has snared nearly $800,000 in prize money following Western Australia’s 23rd Division 1 win for 2017.

The winning ticket was one of five sold nationally in the weekend’s draw and will see 12 lucky West Aussies pocket a cool $66,000 each.

A student from Rivervale wasted no time in coming forward to claim his windfall visiting Lotterywest HQ first thing Monday morning.

“I contemplated camping outside of Lotterywest overnight,” he laughed.

“I wouldn’t let myself believe it until it had officially been confirmed,” he added.

The man said money was often tight and that he survived on a diet of ramen.

“That’s the life of a student,” he laughed.

“When I do play Lotto I always go in on a syndicate because it’s cheaper and more cost effective,” he added.

Lotterywest spokeswoman Pina Compagnone said another seven WA players scored a Division 2 win worth over $11,000.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – we’re certainly on a roll here in WA,” Ms Compagnone said.

“One of the winning syndicate tickets was actually sold at Archer Street Newsagency – the same outlet that delivered our $15 million OZ Lotto winner just a few months ago,” she added.

Ms Compagnone said this week’s OZ Lotto carries a Division1 prize pool of $5 million, while Thursday’s Powerball has jackpotted to a whopping $30 million.

“It’s always important to remember that even when you don’t have a win you’re helping the community have one of a different kind,” she said.

“So far this financial year our sales have generated an amazing $221 million for the WA community,” she added.
