Pinning Down the Future
by Jane Eacott
Clint, who is in his forties, has a form of cerebral palsy that affects his limbs and speech. Although he lives in supported independent accommodation of his own, he has always relied on his parents to help him negotiate life’s challenges.
Leadership training
Clint’s emotional dependence manifested itself in stress-related illnesses whenever his parents took holidays without him. It wasn’t until 2001, when a group of parents of children with disabilities met for ‘Leadership’ training, that Clint’s insecurities could be addressed.
That gathering of parents was a life changing experience for everyone involved. It would result in a family driven support system which would answer the question asked by all parents of children with a disability – “What will happen to my child when I die or can no longer provide support?”
The Genesis of an organisation
The training inspired the parents to form a steering committee to develop a structured support network that would ensure their children could enjoy a safe, secure and fulfilling life independent of their parents. In 2002 they elected a board and incorporated an organisation PIN (Planned Individual Networks Inc.). Armed with a concept plan, they approached Lotterywest and discussed the work that lay ahead to realise their vision.
With guidance and financial support from Lotterywest, PIN obtained professional marketing and strategic planning advice. This helped identify how the goal and core work of developing networks of support and friendship for people with disabilities could be achieved. The strategic plan provided a clear direction, taking the organisation to an operational phase.
Making it happen
A Network Coordinator was appointed to develop ‘Planned Individual Networks’ for a number of people, including Clint. As a fully operational organisation, PIN received a further Lotterywest grant which enabled it to set up a dedicated administrative office within shared premises. (However this doesn’t mean that ‘Network’ meetings invariably take place in the office. Clint’s Network meetings take many different forms; a cocktail party, lunches and trips to the pub!)
With a Coordinator, an Administration Officer, three part-time Network Facilitators, and the ongoing support of donors and committed family members, PIN has already been able to help several people identify their support ‘Networks’. The recent appointment of a Development Officer will further help PIN remain self sufficient; developing a ‘Strategic Partnership Programme’ based on social entrepreneurship.
With help and partnership from Lotterywest, PIN has succeeded in providing personal networks of support to vulnerable people who, like Clint and his family, can have the security that comes with knowing they can count on these relationships as the support they need to live a safe, secure and fulfilling life - today and tomorrow - just like anyone else.
