Overview

Enhancing Community Development Initiatives

ECDI_OverviewLotterywest supports projects for up to three years to improve the well-being of a community through local initiatives that seek to facilitate lasting change.

“Community” can be defined as people who:

  •  are linked because they live in, or come, from a particular geographic area
  •  have a common interest or connection

For example, people living in a rural town, Aboriginal youth, young mothers, children and their parents or carers, people from the same cultural or ethnic background, gay and lesbian youth, people living with a disability.

Projects should create links between people, places, community groups and resources and improve access to the community by people who might otherwise not participate.

An objective is to create more inclusive communities. Inclusion is defined as action that results in people participating in and contributing to their communities.

For many communities there is a desire to develop locally appropriate strategies to enhance support networks, build skills and capacity in identified areas, strengthen the social fabric, increase community self-reliance and identity and reduce social disconnection, anti-social behaviour and social isolation.

Projects may draw upon a range of strategies such as:

  • arts and other creative activities
  • physical activity
  • skills development

Project costs may include:

  • Operating costs such as wages, administrative costs, professional fees, evaluation costs, travel and other expenses.
  • Capital costs (on a one-off basis), depending on the length of the project.
