Birthday numbers come up trumps for northern suburbs couple

A married couple in their 40's from Perth's northern suburbs have come forward to claim the state's latest Division One Saturday Lotto win worth $2 million.

Using family birthdays as their numbers, the couple bought their Systems 7 ticket for just $4.20 from the Royal Perth Hospital Newsagency.

The couple became aware of the win during the draw on Saturday night as they recognised their numbers drawn from the barrel, one by one.

"We can't explain the feeling; we wish all working families could experience it," they said.

When presenting the winning ticket at Lotterywest head office this morning, the couple were still thinking about how they would spend the prize money, but they said it would allow them to "enjoy life."

The last time the Royal Perth Hospital Newsagency sold a Division One winning ticket was in 2004, when a 14 person syndicate of workers from the hospital shared in a $10 million OZ Lotto windfall.

Ever since Lotterywest was established in 1933, the state's hospitals and health services have been amongst the most important beneficiaries of its funding. Last financial year, a record $107.1 million in Lotterywest funding was directed to this area.
