$6.55 OZ ticket is $4 million winner

8 August 2008

A Dianella man in his 70’s has won a $4 million OZ Lotto prize on the last line of his Slikpik 6 ticket, the cheapest OZ Lotto Slikpik available, costing just $6.55.

The man had no idea that he was the nation’s only winner from the $4 million draw until yesterday afternoon.  At the time, he was at a north of the river post office paying a bill, and noticed the Lotto ticket in his wallet.  It prompted him to head to a nearby newsagency to check it.

The news that he was a Division One winner left him utterly bewildered and he headed next door to a chemist.

“I told them I’d just had some shocking news and I needed something to calm my nerves so they gave me some herbal tablets”, said the winner, who was calm, but still in shock, by the time he reached the winners’ room at Lotterywest.

The man had yet to break the news to his wife of many years and said he would have to prepare himself for the task;

“I’ll have to have a few more tablets and then I’ll close all the windows because I know her and she’ll scream!” he said.

The man said he saw the win as an opportunity to help his family.

“I don’t want to splash it around”, he said of his multi-million dollar prize.

The man said he was a regular Lotto player, but the type of ticket he bought depended on how much spare change he had in his pocket at the time.

He bought his ticket at Labouchere Newsagency in Como after stopping at a shop nearby for a sandwich.

“I just never expected to win” said the man, shaking his head in disbelief.
